While proceeding along GrassTree Hill Road a Toyota Camry made no effort to provide myself and the cyclist I was riding with at the time the required 1.5m of clearance. The actions of the driver caused a vehicle travelling towards us to take emergency action and cross onto the shoulder on their side of the road. The video attached clearly shows the registration number of the car as L39DP, a white Toyota Camry.

I reported the incident to Tasmania Police and a week or so later I was contacted regarding the incident.

The police officer asked me if I just wanted a warning issued. In response I advised that this sort of behaviour is so common that it is better to issue a fine. On choosing this option the police officer asked if I would attend court if the driver challenged the infringement notice and in response I said I would be more than happy to do so, as would my fellow rider shown in the video.

I have been advised by Tasmania Police that the driver was fined $200 and received 2 demerit points on their licence.

It is pleasing to see Tasmania Police now acting on videos and I would encourage all cyclists to use cameras and report incidents such as this. It is fairly easy revenue for the police when they use the video evidence to issue an infringement notice.
